What do you think about the next movie, where the traditionally Asian villain is being played by a white dude?
I’m already used to the ‘all Japanese people are evil’ thing in most of the historical Chinese movies dad watches, so I’m not surprised by the ‘white people are evil too’ thing. I feel like Chinese patriotism is built on hate. It’s like, ‘we should all unify because we all hate Japan for something that happened in history!’. It’s not fair that modern Japanese people who have nothing to do with what happened in the world wars end up getting the brunt of the attack. Yes, what Japan did in the Rape of Nanking was horrible, but what can you do about it now? Both countries are just frustratingly stubborn.
Watching Ip Man 2 was irritating because the arrogance the British people portrayed were so over dramatic (maybe it was just bad acting) and it just totally vilifies the British. I also don’t like how the Ip Man series is a obvious example of ‘foreign hate’. The first movie was about the Japanese arrogance, and the second is about British arrogance. And all Chinese people are so modest, yes? After watching the movie I was of course angry at the antagonist. But living in America, I have many friends from all over the world that remind me that times are different. But in China, the population there isn’t that diverse. Most Chinese citizens don’t have foreign friends. This movie (along with the first one) was a hit. People do not stop making these movies because Chinese citizens never get tired of them. It’s an endless cycle.
These frustrate me to no end because I’m both Chinese, Japanese, and an American. I can’t join the ‘foreign hate’ bandwagon that China is on because I’m half Japanese and just as much of a foreigner as Twister, the evil boxer in Ip Man 2. I’m just wishing Chinese producers will start making movies that will break the cycle and open up the minds of the people of China, that the past is the past, and a new generation emerged. People think differently now, and they need to realize that.

I was babysitting all day (and still am now) but I’ll be sure to give my mice some extra love when I get home at midnight. I would give them treats too but I think that’s what made Chubby pass away (heart attack). I even changed the diet so there’s no corn, sunflower seeds, or shelled peanuts. Hopefully the rest will live longer and die of old age. ;_;
